Day 21 – 8/22 Newport

Imagine 60 degrees and breezy on August 22nd. That’s what it was here yesterday and I found it perfect for napping. By around five pm I was hungry and in the mood for chowder and Jack was very well rested. He seemed to try to be telling me to get my butt off the couch. We went to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, hiked all of the trails, ate blackberries, and tried to find birds. Having no luck we then went to the South Beach Fishing Pier where there were a lot of people crabbing and fishing. People had buckets of Dungeness crabs and it looks like a pretty good place to catch them – considering they sell, cooked, for about $30 each it seems like a pretty economical activity. They also catch Rock Crabs which are red and about the size of a blue crab and they are also in abundance. There were a lot of Cormorants, a pelican and gulls. The South Beach Fishing Pier is adjacent to the former Rogue Brewery and it was disheartening to see that every reference to the brewery is gone and all that is left is a large building with no writing on it.

South Beach Fish Market
Stopped by the South Beach Fish Market on my way home for a bowl of clam chowder. I was surprised when I went to pay and the employee said, “It’s on me.”

🐾 Jack’s Notes

I really thought we were going to spend the entire day on the couch – seriously… and not that it wasn’t welcome but c’mon – all day! Finally, he put my leash on and said, “let’s have an adventure.” We sure did have an adventure; we went for a hike through a wonderful place with winding trails and new smells. After, we went to a very long pier where people were catching strange animals. I met another dog who was my size named Buster then some lady fed me cheese. He tied me to the pier fencing while he walked around taking pictures. When the lady ran out of cheese, or just wouldn’t give me any more, I let both of them know how I felt by barking and barking and barking and barking… That night I got to sample something delicious he called clam chowder – it was so good I didn’t want any of his salmon.
